What is temperature?

Temperature is a setting that controls how random and creative Claude is in its responses. It is a scale from 0 to 1 — or 0 to 2 in some implementations.

Low temperature (0.0 – 0.3) — deterministic and predictable. Claude always picks the most likely next word. Perfect for facts, code and precise answers.

🌡️

Medium temperature (0.5 – 0.7) — balanced. Creative enough to vary, precise enough to be useful. The default setting for most use cases.

🔥

High temperature (0.8 – 1.0+) — creative and unpredictable. Claude takes bigger risks with word choices and ideas. Great for creative writing, idea generation and brainstorming.

Controlling creativity without API access

✅ Low temperature — say this:
"Answer precisely and factually. No creative digressions."
"Give me the most correct and conservative answer."

✅ High temperature — say this:
"Be creative and unexpected. Think outside the box."
"Give me five wild and unconventional ideas."

⚠️ Common mistake:
High temperature for factual questions causes hallucinations — Claude "invents" facts with confidence. Always use low temperature when accuracy is critical.
